Slaughterhouse is a third person shooter, in which you take control of a scientist, who in a failed experiment, fused himself with some cows to a half bull half human. This bull person is now a friend of the cows, and wants to get revenge against the humans. You have to fight your way through the slaughterhouse to free all remaining animals.
The biggest problem of the game might be the performance. Whenever you move the camera, there is noticeable motion blur happening. This gets worsened by the mouse sensitivity, which seems to be too low. Sensitivity same as controls however can not even be customized in Slaughterhouse, which is just disappointing. Basic gameplay functions like jumping or sprinting are also missing from the game (there is a charge forward ability, but that isn't the same as a regular sprint option to move faster through the levels).
Visuals in Slaughterhouse are okay, but also nothing mind-blowing. The game uses a cel-shading graphics engine, which looks alright. More annoying are the clipping errors in the game. I was often able to shoot through objects like walls or barricades to hit enemies, and meat bags in the factory halls were often wildly swinging around, being totally out of control. The soundtrack of Slaughterhouse on the other side consists of songs I wouldn't necessarily listen to in my free time, but actually seemed to fit the game.
Another weak area is the enemy AI. There are only 2 enemy types. One is always charging towards the player, while the other one shoots from a distance. The AI only responds, if the player is within a certain range. If the player shoots them from a different position, they will simply not respond at all and allow you to slaughter them. But even if they start moving, they behave very simplistic. Sure their shots can potentially hit you, but their movement patterns are very predictable and always the same. Fighting enemies should be fun in a Shooter, but in Slaughterhouse the AI leaves too much to be desired.
An aspect of the game, that I found to be pretty weird is the UI. It is quite difficult to understand, which symbol means what. There is for example a symbol of a bloody bull face, which could indicate the health status of the player, but it never changed when I got shot at (instead the screen just got more bloody). Turns out, it symbolizes the charge attack of the player... There is also a symbol with a nearly full bottle of some liquid. I still haven't found out what that is supposed to represent. If you already have a small UI (which is not a bad thing), than it should at least be obvious what your symbols indicate.
It also doesn't help that Slaughterhouse is a very short game. You can easily beat it in 10-15 mins, which makes it more of a Demo than a full game.
Result:
At the end Slaughterhouse has a great idea for a game, but leaves a lot to be desired. I dig the premise of being a bull person and wanting revenge on the humans in order to free your cow brothers and sisters. The gameplay however can't keep it up with the concept. Motion Blur and subpar mouse sensitivity mixed with poor AI, clipping errors and an extremely short length leave much to be desired. I want to like Slaughterhouse, but it would be unfair to give the game in its current state a recommendation (perhaps they are going to improve all of this areas and release a much longer version of the game in the future...?)
