Valor (PC) Review

Valor is an Asset Flip, but not even a good or mediocre one. It uses the same visual engine, weapons, respawn plane as Royale Island Showdown, but manages to be even worse than this game. There is nothing original about Valor, just bought Assets from the marketplace. The sad thing is, that there are even decent items on the marketplace, but Valor on the other hand settles for the cheap crap.

The map is an insult to any kind of taste. It is a tiny island, that doesn't even have a visual element for the ground. The ground consists only of a grey chess board element (how lazy can a developer possibly be?). The most parts of the small island are empty, but lo and behold, there is a block with empty buildings on one part of the map and than one another there are 2 (!) hills with single empty houses on top of them. An as if that wasn't enough, there is a crater (how spectacular!) in the middle of the map and this crater consists of 4 houses, which are connected to something like a street element! And surrounding this highlight of the game, there are even a handful of trees...

Oh and I haven't even talked about the starting island (an empty grey block), which is exactly the same as in Royale Island Showdown. Doubtless this was already part of the bought assets, it remains a mess nonetheless. Player models btw are also all identical grey mannequins with zero details (One might say they represent this shallow and empty game pretty accurately).

The gameplay and gunplay is also identical to Royale Island Showdown (https://gamereviewnation.blogspot.com/2021/02/royale-island-showdown-review.html). I am going to summarize it by saying, that movement is okay, but the hit detection is awful. You can shoot the same spot multiple times and get completely different results. There are also no sound effects in the game what so ever except for gunshots (nice earrape, when you shoot for the first time). Obviously you can not get into options during a match and sound or controls are not customizable anyway.

The two things this game actually does better than Royale Island Showdown is offering additional weapons in form of the shotgun and a grenade launcher (which doesn't mean they would handle any better than the other crap weapons; grenade launcher is especially awful) and by offering visual customization options. Visual customization is however a bit pointless, if you only have the most basic visuals elements possible and in some areas somehow even less...

What this game however does worse apart from the visual catastrophe is having a broken matchmaking. I only once managed to host a game and to play with somebody else. The rest of my playtime I wasted by trying to join other peoples matches. This however only resulted in the game not starting at all or me having to stay on the starting island, while the other player got ported on the map. There is also constant error message at the top of the screen (the same error message is even in the official trailer of the game...). Royale Island Showdown at least had Bots you could play with, Valor however often doesn't even let you play, if you find real people. Achievements are obviously also broken and not unlockable (at least the game is consistent in its awfulness).

Btw the game can't even spell Battle Royale correct in the main menu (which is just an empty black screen). Get the hell out of here!

Pro:

- You can sometimes start a match and shoot a weapon...

- Movement is not a complete disaster

Contra:

- Audacious Asset Flip

- Visuals are less than basic

- Tiny, nearly empty, completely hideous map (grey chessboard ground)

- Hideous player models

- No sound effects (except for gunshots)

- Massive Matchmaking problems

- Awful hit detection ruins gunplay

- No customizability of sound or controls

Result:

Valor is a mess and shouldn't be allowed to exist on the Steam Store. Yes, the game is free, but there should still be some kind of quality minimum. Your game needs to be an actual game, Valor is not. It is a tiny collection of the cheapest assets available clued together in the most lazy fashion. A 'Game' that takes less than a hour to develop, shouldn't appear on Steam. Every Tech-Demo I have ever played was far closer to being a real game than Valor. I always try to see the positive aspects of a game. Valor however just makes me angry. There are so many talented people, who don't release their small games to the public due to financial reasons. Valor however took zero effort to create, but will now get a bigger audience due to being on Steam. My advice: Don't install this Valor crap! Be smarter than me and save your time!
