Coloring Book is a F2P Painting Game from Qubic Games. It is the Videogame version of a children’s painting book. There is honestly not much to say about this game. It acts exactly like a Painting Book would. There are a bunch of premade pictures, which the players have to fill with colours. Players get to pick from a large variety of colours and tools. There are many shades of in-between colours to pick, that leave little to be desired. The painting tools vary from various shapes of painting brushes to painting sprays, erasers and a paint bucket. You get to see a default image before you start, but get to choose if you want to try to copy this or use your own imagination for colouring.
This variety of choice is probably Coloring Books greatest strength. Unfortunately, it comes with one really big downside. Apart from the paint bucket, which instantly fills a designated area with the chosen colour, all other painting tools are way too imprecise. It seems impossible to properly paint the designated areas without making a large mess. You can try to correct the areas where your paint overshot, but you will mess up another area in the process and start an endless cycle of corrections. This is especially true if you are trying to paint the smaller areas and details in the pictures. Even with the zoom function and the paint bucket, it proves very difficult. With the other tools, it’s completely impossible. Perhaps the game controls better with a mouse on PC or touch controls on a mobile version, but with an analogstick on console, it is mostly a shaky mess.
Coloring Book allows Coop gameplay via local multiplayer for 2 players, who can paint the pictures together. This is generally a cool feature, that could prove especially useful for parents, who could assist their younger children with the paintings.
There are 13 picture templates available for free. Alternatively, players can also purchase 13 DLC packs for 5 Euro each, the 150 pictures Cute Edition for 12 Euro or the Complete Edition for 25 Euro, which contains an additional 373 pictures.
The pictures were most likely designed by AI. Whether this affects your enjoyment of the game is, of course, based on your personal preference.
Coloring Book features 23 Trophies, including 1 Platinum and 6 Gold Trophies. Getting the Platinum is very easy and should take less than 1 hour. For Trophy Hunters, the game can therefore be absolutely recommended. Completionists, however, should keep in mind that there are 13 additional DLC Trophy packs with 42 additional Trophies in total.
Result:
Coloring Book has a decent concept on paper, but does fail in execution. It could have been a good videogame alternative for physical painting books, but due to the imprecise controls remains the inferior version. Thanks to the paint bucket tool and the variety of free images, it doesn’t end up being a mess, but it’s an underwhelming game nonetheless, that I can’t recommend in general.
